Who Holafly is (and isn't) the right choice for

The most useful thing we can tell you first: Holafly isn't automatically the best eSIM just because it's unlimited. The right choice depends on how you travel.

It's a great fit if you…

use your phone normally or heavily (maps, streaming, uploads, rideshare), want unlimited data with no meter-watching, are on a shorter trip or moving between countries, and value landing already connected.

Look elsewhere if you…

barely use data (a small capped plan is cheaper), are staying 3+ months in one country (a local prepaid SIM usually wins on price), or need heavy hotspot tethering on a destination eSIM (those have daily sharing limits — more below).

1. Check your phone is eSIM-compatible and unlocked

First thing, before anything else: your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Dial *#06# — if you see an EID number, your phone supports eSIM. If your phone came locked to a carrier on a contract, ask them to unlock it (usually free once the contract's up). If the phone is locked, don't scan the QR code — Holafly's refund is much easier if the eSIM hasn't been used yet.

2. Know which you're buying: a Trip eSIM or a Holafly Plan

This is the distinction people get wrong most, and it can cost you.

Destination eSIM (by days)

For a specific trip. You pick the number of days, and — importantly — the clock generally starts when you connect at your destination, not when you buy. No auto-renewal.

Holafly Plans (subscription)

A monthly, quarterly, or annual subscription for frequent travelers, covering many countries. The billing cycle starts the moment you purchase, and it renews automatically.

3. What "unlimited" actually means

Holafly's unlimited plans don't have a fixed cap that cuts you off — but a standard fair-use policy applies, so local networks can briefly manage speeds if usage is extreme. In 15+ months of heavy daily use (including video uploads) it has never been a problem for us. But if you're planning to fully replace home internet, stream 4K all day, or hotspot constantly, read it as "unlimited data, subject to fair-use" rather than a promise of top speed forever.

4. Hotspot/tethering isn't always unlimited

Big one that's easy to miss. On Holafly Plans Unlimited, hotspot is unlimited. On a destination eSIM, sharing is limited — typically around 1 GB per day, and it varies by destination. So if you're buying specifically to tether a laptop, connect a spouse's phone or an iPad, or work from a hotel, check the hotspot allowance for that exact destination before buying — or get Plans, which is built for it.

5. It's data-only — you keep your own number for calls

Most travel Holafly eSIMs are data-only: no local phone number for standard calls or SMS. That's usually fine, because you keep your regular SIM in the phone for your normal number, and use Holafly for data. Calls and messaging go through WhatsApp, FaceTime, Messenger, etc. over the Holafly data. (Holafly Plans Unlimited does offer an optional secondary number for receiving SMS, if you need it.)

6. Install before you leave — but mind the timing

Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi before your trip, so you're ready. For a normal by-days destination eSIM, the plan starts when it connects to a network at your destination — so install early, then when you land: turn the Holafly line on, set it as your data line, and turn on data roaming.

An eSIM isn't its own network; Holafly connects through local operators. So "Holafly works in Thailand" doesn't guarantee identical coverage in every corner of Thailand. In cities and populated areas it's reliable (that's been our experience across 12 destinations). If you're heading somewhere rural, mountainous, or island-heavy, expect signal to thin — download offline maps before you go, as you would with any provider.

9. Buy direct, and know the refund window

Holafly currently allows refund requests within a generous window for a change of plans, provided the eSIM hasn't been activated and it was bought directly from Holafly, plus provisions for incompatible/locked devices. The practical takeaway: buy directly from Holafly (or through our link), not a random third-party reseller, if refund protection matters to you — the strongest refund terms apply to direct purchases.
