DAYS WE'D RECOMMEND4

Playa Carrillo, in our opinion, is the most beautiful beach we've ever been to — the picture-perfect example of what a beach should look like. Think of the posters people hang in their office; that's Carrillo. We spent many days there, relaxing into the evening and watching the sun set.

Playa Camaronal is black sand and very natural, with huge waves that make it bad for swimming — but you might catch baby turtles hatching. Islita has a nice resort with a pool near the beach, though the beach itself is rocky and natural. We loved each spot for its own reasons and went back to all of them many times.

  1. You can stay in Sámara — it's only a 10-minute drive.
  2. Go to the far south end, especially Dec–Feb, for the sunset.
  3. Bring your own drinks and snacks.

Questions we actually get

Is Playa Carrillo worth visiting?

In our opinion it's the most beautiful beach we've ever been to — picture-perfect. If you're anywhere near Sámara, it's a 10-minute drive and absolutely worth it.

How many days do you need?

About four, which lets you split time between Carrillo, the wild black sand of Camaronal, and Islita.

Do you need a car?

Recommended — a car or ATV. The beaches are spread out and natural, and you'll want to drive between them.

Can you swim at these beaches?

Carrillo, yes. Camaronal, no — the waves are huge and it's better for watching baby turtles hatch than swimming. Islita is rocky and natural.
