Straight answers
What's covered, and what isn't.
Insurance only matters if you know where the edges are. Here's the honest shape of it — using Genki Traveler as the example.
✓ Covered
- New illnesses & injuries anywhere in the world
- Hospital stays, surgery, exams (MRI, CT, X-ray) & medication
- Ambulance & emergency medical transport
- Medically necessary repatriation to your home country
- Sports & adventure activities (with a few exceptions)
- Emergency dental after an accident, up to €1,000
- A family member's visit if you're hospitalised, up to €5,000
– Not covered (on Traveler)
- Pre-existing conditions from the year before you start
- Routine dental, vision & preventive check-ups
- Mental health & maternity care
- Alternative & rehabilitative care
- Professional or high-risk sports (e.g. BASE jumping)
- Trip cancellation, delays, lost luggage & theft
Two things worth knowing up front. If you're already abroad with no prior cover, only emergencies are covered for the first 14 days. And cover in the USA & Canada is limited to the first 7 days of each stay (emergencies only) unless you upgrade. Want dental, mental health, maternity and preventive care included? That's Genki Native.
Why we recommend it
We've spent nine years living out of suitcases. Health cover is the part you can't wing.
We're Chris & Shayna — full-time family travelers, currently based in Da Nang, Vietnam. Across Thailand, Vietnam, Bali, Costa Rica, Mexico and everywhere in between, the same question follows you around: if something goes wrong here, am I actually covered?
Genki is the answer we point people to because it's built by nomads for nomads — no need to declare where you're going, sign up even if you're already abroad, cancel anytime, and coverage that follows you across borders instead of resetting every time you land somewhere new.

What makes Genki different
Good to know
Questions we get asked.
Can I sign up if I'm already abroad?
Yes — that's one of the main reasons we like Genki. You can get an instant price and sign up online even if you're already on the road. Just note: if you had no prior cover, only emergencies are covered for your first 14 days.
Which plan should I choose — Traveler or Native?
Genki Traveler is the flexible, month-to-month choice for trips and nomad stints up to 12 months, focused on new injuries and illnesses. Genki Native is full international health insurance you keep long-term, and adds everyday care like dental, vision, mental health, maternity and preventive check-ups (on Premium). Not sure? Genki's sign-up flow can recommend one for you.
How does the discount code work?
There's no promo discount attached — THEDUFRESNES is simply our sign-up code. Signing up through our link or entering our code just tells Genki you came from us. Your price is exactly the same either way; it's how you support what we do, at no cost to you.
What about the USA and Canada?
On Genki Traveler, cover in the USA and Canada is limited to the first 7 days of each stay and emergencies only, unless you add the upgrade for full cover. Prices are higher there, so it's worth deciding before you sign up.
Who actually pays the claims?
Genki is your insurance agent and worldwide health partner; the policy is underwritten by Squarelife, the licensed insurer that holds the funds and handles reimbursements. You also get a 24/7 emergency assistance hotline.
Can I cancel whenever I want?
Yes. Both plans run as a monthly subscription. Traveler can be cancelled anytime after the first month; Native has a one-year minimum, then it's flexible for as long as you need it.
Go anywhere. Stay covered.
